Next New

Suggest a new type of "new media" that doesn't currently exist. Describe it. A new media from my perspective will be a social media exclusively dedicated to Africa and to the cultures and traditions practiced overall in Africa and specifically in Cote D'Ivoire.  The reason why I envision this social media is because we as African either don't know enough about our culture or tend to not promote it the way it should have been.  In most part of Africa, the tradition is kept verbally from person to person. We need to document it, be proud of if and teach it around.

Wiki So Far

If you have not added any content yet, then at least describe the research you have done and what you are working on towards this goal. I am going to expend on the Islam category under the Religion rubric. How is Ramadan experienced in the context of lock down amid covid-19?   One of the key point of Ramadan is sharing at a large scale. How are Muslims copying with the gathering restrictions and the closure of the mosques ? How is media, in terms of software and website, being leveraged to still get the gist of this holly month. How much disruptive is the pandemic and what opportunities are born out of this situation.

P2P

What is file sharing? What is P2P File sharing? What are some examples of P2P file sharing "File sharing is a sharing and transmitting of computer data in a network or internet with various access levels. Through file sharing, one can access and transmit data from one computer to another, making efficient for the users to work on documents regardless of their location or computer access." The current context of the corona virus allows us to make optimal use of this capability.  P2P file sharing is sharing that happens from peer to peer through a software.  According to a New York times article, one example of P2P file sharing would be the  pirated video shared online  through t he wide availability of the broadband access and some  streaming sites like BitTorrent.  Streaming enables people to start watching video immediately without transferring a full coy of the movie. Privacy

The baseline of new media is information. As long as we have information at stake whether physical (old media) or logical(new media) privacy and confidentiality have to be involved. Most of the digital or electronic platforms are subject to privacy an confidentiality issues. It is basically any information that are deemed revealing and could cause harm to the owner of the piece of information. The information could be a simple picture of the Zuckerberg  that is inadvertently re posted on twitter by a stranger who thought that the picture was open to the public. It could also be some critical and highly confidential data about the NSA, sold by the security administrator  Edward Snowden to wikipedia. New media platforms bring together users who are dealing with tonnes of private information of their own and the line between private or confidential and public information could be to thin to perceive.

Advice

Dear Baruch College Administration, You are doing a good job by raising awareness around the topic of new media in the college. As new media is mainly about social and digital media platforms, I think that leveraging platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook and twitter is a very good approach to connect the students as well as the professors. On top of what you already have in place, I suggest you to explore the possibility of having an internal social network like the ones most companies have for their employees to link up and interact with each other. You may start with the students and monitor the posts while thinking about integrating the professors and faculty members and staff.

Creativity

How new media fosters creativity ? As mentioned in our lecture: "Digital media represents a profound change from previous media forms." Digitization is to New media what computer is to internet. Today, in this digitization era, most people own a device enabling to create media, or to create contents. Software application like TikTok has the mission to capture and present the world's creativity, knowledge, and precious life moments. Therefore contributes to fostering people's creativity. Through TikTok, a lot of people are going viral thanks to the power of their creativity. Social media can foster creativity in the sense that people are not ashamed or scared to be judged since they can hide behind the avatar. Usually, creativity suffers from the fact that people mixed up the individual to the art produced. You can like a song and not necessarily like the author. Therefore, hiding behind an avatar, the risk to be biased is reduced and that represents a safe spo...

Creativity and New Media

Cooking is a passion my wife and I share. On the weekends, we usually cook recipes from our home country - Cote d'Ivoire. Recently, we created an Instagram page where we share pictures of the food we cook. The main goal is to use food to introduce people to our culture. For us, it is a good way to stay connected with our roots and also meet people who are familiar with our background or interested in learning more about it. In our culture, Food is very important since it is the main attraction of all festivities (with dance and music of course).  Sharing a homemade dish is the way to share conviviality and show people you are happy to have them around. Adiala means in our dialect - It was good - to say the food was good. This is something you would say to show respect to the cook and thank her/him for the dish. We share pictures, as well as videos and recipe cards. Here a screenshot of the page. You can find us on Instagram @adiala_ivorian_cuisine . Cheers!!!!!

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds enabled the expansion to Work at Home capabilities in diverse industries. Since Virtual Worlds allows to recreate an office setting online, employees do not necessarily need to be physically present to a meeting and collaborate on these online platforms. As stated in Mark Tutton (Going to life in Virtual office in Second Life, CNN), companies have the ability to provide a high level of security to those systems and not jeopardize their privacy, therefore, more and more companies may take advantage of these technologies. Additionally to video conferencing, we also have available VPN (Virtual Private Network) technology which allows an employee to work from any location on the company network. This is one of the most secure and effective way to work remotely. The employee has access to all the systems and platforms of the company even when he is not in the office improving productivity and ensure the security of the company data. This technology is very useful and helpful ...

Blog: Social networking sites

Facebook vs Twitter vs Instagram vs Linkedin As a Millenial, I can totally understand that every social media has its use even if sometimes they overlap. We have so many choices now of platforms that we just use different ways or stick to the only one that we understand the purpose. Facebook as the first platform I personally joined. Facebook represents the  " family reunion" in a sense where you will probably add there your real-life family and friends, the cousin that leaves in Montana and the high school friend who moved to California. It is a place where you usually interact with people you actually know but are far geographically. Since you have your family members on Facebook, posts can sometimes be very polished. Also, people are used to long posts on Facebook compared to other platforms. One new functionality of Facebook very interesting is the groups - that are usually a group of people interesting in the same subject interacting in a closed environment. Ot...

Blog about Twitter

How does a Twitter discussion compare to a BlackBoard Discussion? To an in-class discussion? A twitter discussion is limited to 140 characters per tweet. Usually, this constraint makes the author of a tweet go straight to the point. Also, the use of Hashtags allows following discussions about a topic even if you do not know the authors. Everybody talking about a subject will just #topic to their tweet and everybody around the world can see it and interact. The diversity of users on twitter creates a huge variety of topics discussed there. You can find discussions about food, lifestyle to scholars talking about scientific findings. A blackboard discussion is in an academic setting therefore the scope of the topics discussed is already limited. Users on blackboard usually are in the same class and may meet each other in real life. This can lead to people not being honest in what they share if they don't want to be judged. Blackboard is more a collaboration tool and will encour...

Blog Social networking

The basis of blog social networking is to connect. It is a means, a media that is used to share a content, whether an experience, an idea or a passion. In doing so, a purposeful relationship can potentially be established and nourished overtime. It is a way to send a message, a way to educate, a way to express one's opinion about a specific topic, a way to give back to the community etc... Some benefits of these technologies are the financially affordable aspect, the scalable aspect, and eventually the potential to go beyond and generate sales out of your audience. For example, according to the New York times article about how Obama tapped into social networks' power, “Thomas Jefferson used newspapers to win the presidency, F.D.R. used radio to change the way he governed, J.F.K. was the first president to understand television, and Howard Dean saw the value of the Web for raising money,” said Ranjit Mathoda, a lawyer and money manager who blogs at Mathoda.com. “But Senator Ba...

Blog vs Wiki

A wiki is a collaborative web tool where different people can provide information about a topic. Different people can modify posts adding, updating or correction information. Since different person contributes to the content, we can say they are numerous authors. a wiki also evolves since the authors can update the text and make sure all that all information is accurate. It is a great tool for projects that need cooperation and that are knowledge-based since everybody in the team can participate fully. A blog ( also known as Weblog) is a website where an individual or a team can post articles gravitating around a topic. Although some blogs are very professional and related to businesses or corporations, most blogs are informal and personal. Just people deciding to talk about a given subject and sharing their opinion on particular topics. In comparison to Wiki, blogs are less collaborative and probably more complicated to navigate as some of them require some coding knowledge (H...

Social media influencers marketing

Hello fellows, Social media influencers marketing is the topic of my term paper. Social media influencers are individuals who share content through social media such as YouTube, Instagram or more recently Tik Tok. They shape the audience's attitude through posts (videos, pictures, ...) on social media sharing their experience with some products and services and are therefore used widely for marketing purposes. On most social media platforms, we are exposed to sponsored (or not) content providing feedbacks or sharing tips on diverse topics. They are responsible for most of the trends on social media and have the ability to showcase their narrative on different topics. Depending on one's interest, from makeup to hairstyles or cooking, everybody should be able to find an influencer specialized on the particular topic and a lot of niches are covered, even the one we would not think of. One of our goals is to provide a definition of the concept of social medial influencer providi...
